Asian Improv aRts Midwest’s mission is to build a vital, self-empowered Asian American Community in the Chicago area by advancing the understanding and profile of Asian American cultures through the traditional and contemporary cultural arts. AIRMW is dedicated to creating productive relationships with artists, community and institutions in order to produce high quality arts programs that accurately reflect the multicultural, multi-ethnic reality of Chicago and the nation.
Asian Improv aRts Midwest is supported in part by The Illinois Arts Council Agency, The MacArthur Funds for Culture, Equity, and the Arts at the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the Alphawood
Foundation, CDH. , P.C, JCCC Foundation, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, The City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), and The Joyce Foundation.
The individual is in a continuous flux. The fluid, dynamic state of being that is shaped by variable experiences is surrounded by culture and aesthetics. This is presented in a visible, observable release and transference known as “dance.” The Bridge…is the individual.
Curator Fujima Yoshinojo (Rika Lin) and Asian Improv aRts Midwest return to Links Hall with a special edition of the annual Bridge Dance Festival. This live stream event brings together dancemakers from two continents, connecting their Asian heritage and presents their reactionary state of being.
The 2020 Festival features (bios below): Mari Fujihira (Tokyo), Irene Hsiao (Chicago), Ayako Kato (Chicago), and Mandarakoyomi Thinking (Kobe)–dancer Masayuki Sumi and musician Shunichiro Hisada.
Bridge Dance Festival debuted in spring of 2018. The first festival was a culmination of four years of Japanese-focused programming at Links Hall, including the National Performance Network Asian Exchange, Beyond the Box, and Links to Japan. In November 2019, Asian Improv aRts Midwest joined the festival as a co-presenter, expanding audiences and artists alike.
Through Bridge Dance Festival, we hope to demonstrate a fierce love of and respect for international cultural exchange and connection. In the face of rising US nationalism and the aggressive political reality we find ourselves in, Links Hall and Asian Improv aRts Midwest provide a home for global connections that are inspired and supported by mutual respect for cultural similarities and differences.
